Restaurants

Many restaurants can be found in the city center – Hradec Kralove has a big square (as a matter of fact, it is really called “Big square” – in Czech “Velke namesti”) with restaurants all around. Some of the biggest and most renown restaurants have their own bars, discos, wine cellars, tearooms inside, some of them are also hotels. Restaurant Satchmo in Dlouhá Street 96 is very homely, and there is a dance club included. Vinarna Ulita at Malé Square 120 is not just a wine cellar, it offers wide assortment of food and drinks. The Cerny Kun at the Malé Square 10 is very well known. You can found more restaurants of that name in other cities in the area. If you are looking for typical Czech cuisine, you might like to visit restaurant U Letcu in the J. Cerneho Street. In summer on weekends, it has some special music program included. California in the Susilova Street is not as typical, but it offers nice garden restaurant, that can be miles more comfortable than the interior, especially in the hot summer days. The prices there are reasonable, lunch starting at 60 CZK (2 €). If you are searching for restaurant for a large group of people, you should visit restaurant Na Hrade in the Velke Square, which provides 85 seats. Traditional Italian restaurant is Cartellone in the Klicperova Street near Velke Square.

Oriental cuisine

In Hradec Kralove, there are unfortunately no Indian restaurants, but there can be found a few Chinese bistros – one of them is located on the Velke Square, some of them are portable kiosks that can be almost anywhere. The Orient bar can be found in the Tomkova Street 139.

Pubs & Inns

Pubs can be found almost anywhere in the city center, and also along the Elbe and Orlice rivers. Beer is a national drink of the Czechs, so it is very popular, and in many pubs you can order just beer, or maybe some wine and spirits. In the Czech Republic, the light beer (Pilsner, Budweiser) is drunk most commonly, but dark beer is also available. The pubs don’t usually have their web pages, only those who are part of a hotel or a sports- or shopping center sometimes have, but there shouldn’t be a problem finding them in the street, they are on every corner. Sometimes, the pubs have a discotheque inside, that is opened only in the night, e.g. Disco Club Lejsovka http://www.czechdineout.com/lang/

Pizzerias & trattorias

Ordinary pizza can be bought in almost any restaurant, but if you are looking for an Italian chef’s masterpiece, you might like to visit Pizzeria Daniela in Chelcickeho street 1640 or MondoPizza IV in Kutnohorska street 226.

Cafeterias & Teahouses

Cafés in the Czech Republic are not as popular as for instance in France, but there are still some very fashionable cafeterias and teahouses, e.g. Kavarna U Knihomola at Velké Square 26, Caffe bar U Mattyho (Palachova 1133), BAR – BANEK (Karla IV. 430), which is nonsmoking; and from the teahouses e.g. Slunecni Cajovna (Velké Square 1) and Cajovna U Zlate Konvicky (Havlickova 508).

Fast foods & Takeaways

Big Food in Brnenska 1825/23a and two McDonald’s in Pilnackova and Brnenska are the international fast foods, but there are many small fast foods in the streets in the center, especially in the pedestrian precinct. Well-known Hamburger kiosk is located by the crossroads of Ceskoslovenske armady and Paleckeho Streets, where you can buy a “Czechburger”, a hamburger that is cooked the way the Czechs do. There can be bought hot dogs (about 0.3€/10 CZK), pizza (depends on the size – 0.5€ to 2€), bottles of flavored-soda or some fizzy drinks (Coke 0.5€), and local special food is “langoš” – it is in fact of Hungarian origin, but is as popular as Burger in the United States. It is a flat salty pie with grated cheese and ketchup on the top. There are no problems with the hygiene, all the restaurants are checked very often, and they are according to the standards of the European Union.

Vegetarian restaurants

One vegetarian-only restaurant is located in the town, in the Karla Hynka Máchy Street. It is called Bazalka ve dvorku (Sweet Basil in the backyard). Many other restaurants have a vegetarian section on the bill of fare.
